Overviews of New Models in Strategic Philanthropy
Philanthropy in America: An Historical and Strategic Overview
The Philanthropy in America: An Historical and Strategic overview was written in partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB).
Philanthropy as an industry, with professionally managed organizations addressing the root causes of social problems, was developed in the United States. This paper traces its development from early colonial days through the formation of the first great philanthropic foundations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The case was designed for use in an MBA class, but is also appropriate for undergraduate use.
